Elliott's Fish and Chips, Tideswell, Peak District, Derbyshire

Elliott's is in its 48th year this year. I had a good chat with the jovial shop owner as he was frying my cod to order. Tideswell is a pretty village in the heart of Derbyshire’s Peak District and he said when the holiday cottages fill up the chip shop gets very busy.

There is a very good menu here. Apart from cod and haddock you can also buy black pudding, Spam fritters, pineapple fritters, and deep fried Mars bars.

Tideswell has plenty of benches, so sitting to eat is no problem here. I parked myself outside St John the Baptist Church - ‘Cathedral of the Peaks’.

The chips were excellent. Pale golden and chunky with a good fluff inside them.

The cod portion had a very light batter. It was reminiscent of a batter I’d eaten in Duffield a few years back with an almost Rice Krispies bite to it. The fish within was pure white and fell apart in meaty flakes.

I enjoyed the traditional mushy peas which were pale and starchy, although I do prefer them a bit runnier. The proprietor kindly put them in a pot as requested rather than over the chips.

All the packaging was biodegradable card, paper and wood.

My lunch came to £9.45. It was a generous portion of food and I devoured every last morsel. Highly recommended if you are hiking in this area and you work up a hunger.
