Moira Chippy, Moira, Leicestershire

The Chip Fiends found another chippy in the East Midlands that serve orange chips! As regular readers will be aware this is a West Midlands delicacy and is rarely found anywhere else in the U.K.

Something rather odd struck us upon entering this chip shop. There were no menu boards or price lists! We could only go by what we could see in the hot box so asked for small fish and chips; one with peas, the other with curry.

The gentleman serving was very friendly and polite. We noticed by some posters on the wall that he was also an author.

After the food was dished up we returned to the car to eat.

The food was tasty but it was evident that it had been waiting a while for us.

The chips were cut from new potatoes and were a little bit greasy. The orange coating was authentically West Midlands style.

The fish was a sensible sized portion. Some parts of the batter were thin and tantalisingly revealing the cod inside, whereas other parts were thicker and a bit sticky.

The curry sauce made a good dip but was nothing special. The mushy peas were a rare kind: whole soft peas swimming in a runny sauce. We don’t often find them like this. The dye was a bit OTT but the home soaked peas were a good accompaniment to the meal.
