North Bay Fisheries, Scarborough, North Yorkshire

We could argue that this is where it all started for us. A childhood holiday and an early evening meal of fish n chips from North Bay Fisheries. We reminisced about the occasion in a previous blog called 'Chip Memories of Scarborough' where we jokingly mumbled “get your own!” to anyone who looked at our chips.

It was high time we visited this chippy again. North Bay Fisheries is only open for three hours a day mid week but it is also well known for long queues, successfully managing to cram a lot of customers in between 16.30 - 19.30.

The shop is efficiently run. On arrival you place your order, are given a number, and then you join the queue. It took us about ten minutes to get served and it was well worth the wait. The server asked if we wanted scraps (yes please!) and salt and vinegar. We walked over the road for a seat but unfortunately the bench in the shelter outside Peasholm Park had gone so we sat on the steps instead, sharing our portion of medium haddock, chips and peas.

The batter was outstanding. It was extremely knobbly and just the type that makes great scraps.

The haddock hidden under the batter was skinless and firm. We prefer it a bit flakier and moist but it was delicious nevertheless.

The chips were on the chunky side with a good fluff inside. The portion was generous. Plenty to share!

The mushy peas were creamily delicious. A small pot went a long way.

We were so involved in eating that we didn’t notice anyone walk by coveting our meal. Another memorable chippy tea for the Chip Fiends.
