The Island House, Wolverhampton, West Midlands

We've been notching up the West Midlands diary entries this year, and here's one more! On this sunny Saturday we took a pleasant stroll along the canal towpath out of Wolverhampton until we reached the Science Park where we joined Stafford Road and found the chippy a few yards
 along.

Island House have an extensive menu with a great array of different types of fish, but ordering is fairly easy as you can look out for 'specials' on the board which help you to design your meal. Find the fish you would like (cod, haddock, hake, salmon, plaice), add chips, then a sauce (Chinese curry, Irish curry, mushy peas, and so on...)

The premises are clean and smart with an efficient ordering system where you get a numbered ticket and wait to be called once your meal is ready.

One Fiend ordered cod with Irish curry and the other of us had salmon with peas. The fish was fried to order and after a short wait we were outside at a picnic bench tucking in.

The large cod came in a long, serpentile fillet. It was pure white and firm with nice big, satisfying flakes.

Salmon is rarely served in fish and chip shops, despite being a very popular fish with the British public. Maybe people think it will turn out too greasy if deep fried as it is one of the oily fish. The salmon we tried at Island House however was not greasy at all. It came in a lovely chunky portion and was perfectly steamed inside the crisp, knobbly batter.

The mushy peas tasted lovely. The sauce was on the runny side which we tend to prefer rather than those that are thickly mixed and go dry very quickly.

The Irish curry sauce was spicy and sweet. It's hard to describe all the flavours it gave. One of us said they thought they could taste marzipan!

The chips came in a decent portion. We couldn't quite manage to eat all of them. Although battered lightly they weren't orange coloured like they are in the Black Country. Very tasty but not quite bostin'.
