Byrnes Chippy, Liverpool

Pete Wylie sang “Come Back” so we did. 2018 was the last time we were in Liverpool so we were long overdue a return visit.

It took about five hours to get to Byrnes via public transport but it was worth it.

As we neared our destination the heavens opened and we got soaked. “How do we eat fish and chips in this downpour?” I said. Thankfully it slowed down to a drizzle as we reached the shop.

It was just before 1pm and the shop was rammed. Who needs to stay open in the evening and at weekends when your shop is this busy during the day?

So many chips were being scooped from the fryer. It was like a Friday night. I put in the order and patiently waited as everything was cooked to order. We had decided on haddock, chips, fruity curry, a cheese savoury and a home made fishcake.

It all looked amazing. The proprietor had been working on creating an amazing batter. That thin golden batter you can see the fish through with some delicate crispy peaks and edges.
It covered a chunky skinless fillet that tasted as fresh as you get at the seaside.

The fruity curry was sweet and spicy like an Irish curry sauce with added vitamins! I wonder if it counted towards our five a day.
The chips were pale gold and had a decent chunk to them.

The fishcake had that same delicate batter as the fish. It surrounded a soft and fluffy mashed potato with flakes of fish and added parsley. Absolutely delicious. The cheese savoury was a similar construction oozing with melted cheese.

You could eat here every day if you wanted. The menu is extensive with poached or grilled salmon with rice, battered mushrooms and fishwiches to name a few items.

Everything was spot on. One of the best chippies we’ve ever been to.
