The Wellfield Finest Fish and Chips, Cardiff

The Wellfield is suitably situated on a street populated by independent cafes and coffee shops. It bodes well for a good quality feast.

Chip Fiend 1 had a meal of cod, chips, and Irish curry sauce. Chip Fiend 2 had preferred haddock, chips, and mushy peas.

Our fish was fried to order, and ready after a short wait. The food was boxed with a small piece of tape to secure the lid should the portion of chips pop it open.

Sitting on a rugby pitch down the road we unpacked the boxes and tucked in. Both fish had tasty, thin crispy batter. The cod had a crisp, knobbly, golden batter. It’s chunky flakes were pure white and fresh.

The haddock was similarly tasty but not quite up to the same level of wow tastiness of the cod.

The Wellfield chips were cut quite chunky and there was a generous portion. They had just started to go a tad wrinkly but not enough to spoil them. We admired the sharp edges as we held them up to the light.

The Irish curry sauce was thick, rich, and spicy.

It was good to find that the Wellfield were serving proper home-soaked peas. However, this portion had been allowed to set like concrete. What a shame.

However, it seemed quite fitting that we were picnicking on a rugby pitch. What better way to enjoy fish and chips in Cardiff?
