Angelo's Fish Bar, Nuthall, Nottinghamshire

This is a chippy with friendly and enthusiastic staff. The shop is eager to please and gets rave reviews in return. There was a cheerful atmosphere on the day one of us visited. They just need to sort the batter out.

It was thick and sticky and looked more like heavy sponge pudding wrapped around the haddock I ordered. Maybe they were having an off day.  This was a pity, as the haddock inside was fresh and tasty, once I had peeled the sponge away.

The shop organises its fish and chips in two portion sizes with an option to add chips for an extra £2.20. This is a good idea as it is an efficient way of ordering. However, as haddock only comes in a large size I asked for 'small chips' to accompany it but ended up with a humungous portion!  In fact, so huge was the portion I couldn’t shut the lid on the box! Some people appreciate this of course, but I find being faced with a mountain of food quite off-putting. I only ate a fraction of the chips and took the rest home to use as oven chips for another day.

The best part of the meal was the portion of mushy peas. These were the proper homemade style and delicious.
