The Chypsy King, Loughborough, Leicestershire

Does Loughborough need another chip shop? If the food from here is anything to go by then I’d say YES.

Moira Street seems a quiet refuge not far from the hustle and bustle of the town centre. It seems to have everything you need; a grocery store, a launderette, a brewery (!) and, of course this chippy.

We arrived not long after opening to the promising signs that fish was cooked to order. You can have fish here in three ways; with batter, without batter or in breadcrumbs.

One of us had it in breadcrumbs, with mushy peas. T’other had fish in batter with curry sauce. The chips were fried from new potatoes. The chap serving was very friendly so we had a chat whilst he worked. He recommended the Moonface brewery a few doors away for washing our lunch down.

The chips were very good indeed, with a nice flavour of new potatoes but weren’t soggy at all. The batter was light and crisp, the breadcrumbs were a nice change. Also light and not too thick a coating. The curry sauce was very thin. The only thing disappointing about this meal as the peas were excellent.
