Barwell Fish Bar, Barwell, Leicestershire

Barwell is small village on the outskirts of Hinckley. It once had a display known as the Bog Garden for its Barwell in Bloom. Yes the Bog Garden was toilets with flowers potted in them.

It’s been a few years since we came here to Chris’s. Today it’s Barwell Fish Bar. We heard they’d got a new fryer installed so it reminded us to visit.

This chippy is in a prime location with benches right outside. A couple of older chaps were already here enjoying their lunch when I arrived.

You can’t beat the friendly service here. Lots of smiles, pointing out the lunchtime special, which was a bargain at £3.99 and a mention that curry, peas etc was included. The staff asked if I wanted salt and vinegar on the fish. I declined as knew I wasn’t going eat batter that looked like that…

I must say it was a massive portion for the money. The chips were nice and the curry sauce very thick with sultanas in it, something you don’t see that often. The batter was that Leicestershire delicacy of sponge with a raw inner. It was peeled back to reveal large flakes of cod.

If the batter was as good as the service they’d be onto a winner here.
