Kettering Cod, Kettering, Northamptonshire

Kettering Cod is one of those chip shops that ought to have awards coming out of its gills. A large poster faces the door proclaiming that food is cooked to order and that customers should expect a 5 to 10 minute wait. This is good news for Chip Fiends such as ourselves who love our food to be freshly fried. The ever-so polite, friendly chap serving reiterated this as well, proudly saying that he likes his food to be served fresh. Wonderful.

I ordered cod, chips and peas open. Then patiently waited while looking at what else was on the menu:

Kettering value box: Mini cod and small plain sausage with chips or salad

Seafood basket: seafood, chips and tartare sauce

Masala cod in naan and salad

Chicken curry and chips

These were some of the more original items available.

My fish was ready first and drained of oil in the hot box while the chips finished frying.

Then the food was boxed; salt and vinegar was sprinkled on top and my mushy peas were dolloped in one corner, so as not to make the lovely crispy batter spoil on the fish.

I was soon tucking into my meal under the midday sun.

This was a good quality piece of skinless cod. So delicious! The batter was knobbly and light as air. Every piece of it was eaten.

The chips were perfect. Again, very fresh. They had firm, straight edges, were crispy on the outside but light within.

You only have to look at the photo of the mushy peas to see how amazing they were. Tasty and homemade, they held their shape like soft mini marbles in a sauce that remained moist throughout the meal. They were the cherry on top of a marvellous meal.
