Angelo's Chippery, Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire

There are probably as many 'Angelo's' chip shops as there are 'Dave's' and 'Steve's'... We have certainly visited a few.

This one is located in the Horninglow district of Burton upon Trent. Although the advertised opening time was 11.30am we found that it actually opened at noon. So if you are going yourself, take care not to arrive too early. By the time noon came we were definitely ready for something to eat.

The social distancing measures here included a sneeze screen and a notice to inform customers to stand behind a line marked out on the floor. Mask wearing caused some communication difficulties but we got there in the end. It is something we are all going to have to practice! The staff in the shop were chipper and we noted that they had a uniform of 'Angelo's Chippery' embroidered polo shirts.

One of the Chip Fiends had a mini fish and chips, while another of us went for a special which included curry sauce. The mini was actually the size of a regular we would say, so it made for good value for money. (The special was £4.70).

The chips were very good. Freshly cooked with a good bite to them. One of the chips was longer than the plastic fork!

The curry sauce was a standard chip shop type. Sweet-tasting with flecks of soya in it. However, it was mixed very thick, which was a bonus, so it clung nicely to the chips.

The cod was a chunky fillet that came in big flakes. Nice and juicy, it was very satisfying. Less so was the batter. This was as floppy as a dish cloth. Luckily none of it had stuck to the fish, so it could be easily peeled away like a damp blanket. We did wonder why so many chip shops we have visited recently in the Midlands seem to be unable to serve a thin, crispy batter.

The portion of chips was very generous so we wrapped about half of them up and took home to freeze for oven chips.
