Dhillon's Plaice, Coventry, Warwickshire

We love dinky little chip shops like Dhillon’s. The building looks like something that has been built on the footprint where a garage used to be. There was a chip shop like this in Ibstock, Leicestershire many years ago, and we have seen photos of similar chippies in Wakefield. (Note to selves: must visit the latter).

Dhillon’s fry their fish fresh. Excellent. Just how we like it. The customer in front of us was having something that looked like a battered shark curled into a box to take away. Goodness! We decided to go for the small option, with chips and peas, open. (Peas in a separate pot).

After a few minutes the fish was ready. In the meantime some peas were dished into a pot and bagged.

Several scoops of chips were placed onto a sheet of paper before my eyes. I requested them open (in a tray) again.

I found a wall nearby to sit on. No sign of seats anywhere in Walsgrave!

The fish was good. The batter fulfilled its promise, with its knobbly bits on top, although the underside was a tad claggy. The cod inside was a nice, fresh, chunky fillet.

The mushy peas had that graininess and unpleasant taste of the tinned type. I was glad they hadn’t been poured over the rest of the meal. The chips were unfortunately a bit dry and chewy.

Good points: Freshly fried fish; cheerful and friendly staff.

Points for improvement: Soak and cook 'homemade' peas on the premises.
