South View High Fry, Chester, Cheshire

South View High Fry is a cosy residential chippy on the outskirts of Chester City Centre and very near to the Shropshire Union Canal.

There are some historic photos on the wall of the chip shop showing Deponeo’s Chip Van from 1972, which sold fish and chips in Chester and the surrounding towns and villages.

The decor in South View High Fry was redolent of the 1970s with its teak-effect counter and cupboard under the mushy pea Bain Marie, and the brown ceramic tiles on the walls.

The shop sells cod, haddock, scampi, fish cakes and king prawns in batter. You can buy three onion rings for £1. A chip batch was also on the menu. (In Brenda’s at Sheffield this is a chip bread cake; in the East Midlands it is a chip cob).

I ordered haddock, chips and peas, open, but was asked if I wanted the peas poured over or served separate which was very good.

The fish was fried to order. When it was ready, the fish and chips were parcelled loosely in paper after having the salt and vinegar put on for me. I walked across the road where there were some benches outside a block of flats.

The meal came to under £6 and was a sensible portion. The haddock was delicate and the flakes fell apart nicely. The batter was thin and crisp.

The chips were cut quite thin and had a dark golden colour. They had a good, firm texture.

The excellent mushy peas were homemade. The peas themselves held their shape nicely and came in a runny sauce. There were slightly on the sweet side. With a dollop of mint sauce they would have been heavenly!

I ate every last morsel and deposited my litter in a nearby bin.
