Hartshill Chippy, Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire

Although the menus still read 'Under New Management', the owner of Hartshill Chippy explained that he had owned the premises for a long time. After the previous manager "fell in love" and left, he had these menus printed and a year on he’s still trying to get rid of them. So if you visit this chippy, be reassured it's a well-established frying team working here! It caused some amusement from the locals who were in when this Chip Fiend visited.

A friendly chatty chap, the manager started conversing with his colleague and customers about the various battered chocolate treats that have become popular in the last couple of years. He had tried a Creme Egg and it hadn’t worked. Never mind. The fish and chips here were very good.

There were a couple of mini fish in the cabinet but I wanted to try something fresh so asked for a large fish with chips and Chinese curry.

The portion was huge. I knew I wouldn’t manage it, but try I did. As the manager served it up he said, "That looks good... Good enough to eat!"

The chips were nice with a good structure between soft and firm. They were drowned in three ladle-fulls of thick, peppery sauce.

The fish was so long it perched on the food tray like a milkmaid’s shoulder yoke: overhanging on either side. It had quite a thick - but crispy - batter.

The cod inside the batter was pure white and nicely cooked. If my stomach was twice as big I would’ve eaten every last morsel.
