Toppers, Nuneaton

It has to be said, Nuneaton has some good chip shops. We’ve been a few times and had a few noshes there. Our favourite was Wale’s, which is sadly now closed.

This Chip Fiend decided to go to Toppers for a sit down meal.

The meal deal was large cod, chips, mushy peas, a mug of (builders) tea and a slice of bread and butter for £7.95.

The tea was prepared whilst I stood at the counter and the slice of bread and margarine, not butter, was pulled out a bread bag, ready spread. The slice was placed on a small polystyrene plate and placed on a tray with tea and cutlery.

There were some people already dining in there. Taking advantage of the special offer for “senior citizens”.

I heard someone order “senior fish and chips and roe and chips”

One gentleman was giving detailed instructions to the staff “Fish and Chips, with salt and vinegar on, wrapped up to takeaway...”

I took a seat at a table where the previous customer had flicked mushy peas at the wall.

A short wait and the plate was brought out. It was a decent sized cod of very light batter and firm white flakes.

The chips were soft, rather than crisp but were very nice. The peas were how we like them; undyed with some bite.

Now I’ve never understood why anyone needs bread with fish and chips but I had a couple of bites midway in the meal for a change of texture.

It was all very good but I was stuffed before I could finish all the chips, let alone the bread and marge. As I left a queue had formed, proving how popular the place was.
