Royal Fisheries, Whitby

Spoilt for choice in Whitby where chip shops just outnumber jet shops by a tiny margin, the Chip Fiends decided to eat at Royal Fisheries.

This is a smart establishment with a takeaway and restaurant in a quiet pedestrian street. The restaurant does a set meal called a Yorkshire Special. This is a choice of cod or haddock that comes with chips, mushy peas, pot of tea, and bread and butter. This is what we ordered. It keeps a restaurant meal simple. You can have the fish in two sizes and the tea can be upgraded to a bottle of Yorkshire Wold Top beer if you wish.

One of the things that drew us to this chip shop was that it serves crinkle cut chips. We haven’t come across many chip shops that do this. Two that spring to mind are Robinson’s in Cromford and Wale’s in Nuneaton, the latter of which has now closed.

The tea and bread came first, shortly followed by the star attraction.

The haddock was one of the best we had sampled all year [visited in 2019]. Without a hint of grease it was perfectly steamed inside a very thin, crisp batter. Pure white and fresh, it squeaked on the teeth.

The crinkle cut chips were light and fluffy with a crisp outer. Quite an achievement with such a dainty chip. There were quite a few shardy bits though.

The tartare sauce was delicious. Creamy but with hints of dill and some chunky gherkin pieces, it made a great dip for the chips!

The bread was nice and light too. Fresh from Botham’s bakery just down the street.

Service was friendly and attentive. Highly recommended.
