The Little Fish Bar, Norwich

One of the Chip Fiends was in Norwich. On this occasion I plumped for The Little Fish Bar, a little way out of town just off Earlham Road on Bowthorpe Road.

It’s one of those suburban chippies that caters for locals who pull into the front car park to purchase take-home meals. (There are no obvious benches nearby to sit and eat, and not really any space for one outside the shop, as this spot is best utilised for car parking).

The shop serves a multitude of fish: cod, plaice, haddock, rock eel. (I ought to try the latter again some time).

I asked simply for ‘fish’ with chips and curry sauce.

The batter had an impressive texture and tasted good too. It was light and knobbly. At first I thought the fish inside was going to be haddock as it had its skin intact. However, it was cod (I could tell by the fibrous grain of the flakes). A lot of Norwich chippies serve their cod with skin on, we have found.

The curry sauce was good. It tasted exactly like the sort you can buy from a Chinese supermarket that comes in a block. You add boiling water to it in order to bring it to life. It made a good dip for the chips.

The large-portioned meal was good, but as there is no obvious place nearby to sit and eat al fresco, this chippy is definitely best for locals who come in a car.
