Eric’s Fish And Chips, Thornham, Norfolk

The Chip Fiends had lunch at Eric’s. The chippy is on the North Norfolk coast road at Drove Orchards alongside a handful of other outlets including a farm shop and Gurney’s Fish Shop.

The interior of Eric’s is smart and trendy. Decorated in a colour scheme predominantly yellow and green - it puts to mind golden chips and mushy peas. Although there were lots of staff working and the restaurant was relatively quiet it took almost 20 minutes for our order to be ready. Don’t expect fast food. Everything is cooked to order.

The weather was good enough to sit outside so we had a takeaway rather than a restaurant meal.

Between us we had a slap up feast of haddock, chips, mushy peas, tartare sauce, battered gherkins, and for pudding a fried jam sandwich.

The meal was beautifully packaged in card boxes and we ate with wooden cutlery.

The haddock was pure white and delicate, encased in a light crisp batter. The chips were tasty and cut to a medium thickness. The peas had a good flavour and colour but were thick and stodgy. We prefer them with a tad more liquid in the mix.

The unexpected highlight of the meal were the battered gherkins which we dipped in the delicious homemade tartare sauce. For this portion, two large gherkins had been cut lengthways and deep fried in batter. They were light as a feather and not at all vinegary. The chunky tartare sauce was the perfect accompaniment.

Now for the jam butty. It was not as bizarre as we anticipated. Very similar to a jam doughnut, we agreed that the idea worked very well.

There are two other Eric’s chippies, one at Holt, Norfolk and the other at St Ives near Cambridge. We preferred the food served at Thornham than that which we had tried on the opening day of the St Ives chip shop.
