Harry and Fred’s Van, Lichfield

Chamois leather or batter?

We’ve seen this chip van parked in the centre of Lichfield a few times. The words Black Country Fish and Chips were enticing.

Now, chips from a van are not always the most satisfying so we were a little apprehensive. When the fish and chips were ordered, so was a pickled onion. Just in case.

The lid on the tray was promptly shut before it was handed over. One can only assume it was to protect the eyes of the staff from the sight of this shoddy example of fish and chips.

Greasy, chewy filth. Utterly devoid of flavour. The batter was almost certainly some of the worst we’d ever seen; yes it really did look like a wet piece of chamois leather. There was some skinless fish inside but it was impossible to determine what it was.

The greasy chips were akin to rubber, such was the appalling texture.

The pickled onion was a welcome relief to this abundance of disappointment; crunchy and invigorating to the tastebuds. The onion was devoured, most of the other muck was dumped in a bin.
