Eric's Fish and Chips, St Ives, Cambridgeshire

The Chip Fiends can’t resist the temptation of a new chip shop opening. One of us promptly made our way over to St Ives, Cambridge to experience the fanfare at Eric’s during its first weekend.

Word had clearly got around as the restaurant and takeaway counter were doing a roaring trade. Many members of staff were working efficiently behind the counter and front-of-house to ensure that the queueing customers didn’t wait long for their fish and chips.

This Chip Fiend had cod, chips and curry sauce.

It would be fair of me to hope Eric’s St Ives were experiencing ‘teething problems’ on the day I visited. Whoever had mixed the curry sauce had made a terrible mistake. It was watery (with the consistency of coffee) and had no flavour whatsoever. Without the sauce my lunch had very little taste. I left disappointed and an expensive £10 lighter in pocket. The experience was light years away from the lovely meal I had had at Eric’s, Thornham.

The premises in St Ives are smart and stylish but I also couldn’t help thinking the shop would be much better placed in a seaside resort rather than this strange ‘drive-through’ spot off the A1123 with Subway, McDonalds and Costa for neighbours.
