G M West Fish and Chips, Norwich

We're not sure how we didn't come across this little gem of a chippy sooner.
This chip shop has an unspoilt charm that would appeal to lovers of traditional British chip shops from far and wide, but it is probably only known to locals.

Run by two ladies, it is the kind of establishment where regulars are greeted with the phrase "what would you like today?" and then enquired after their health. When we visited it had a diverse lunchtime clientele of a workman, young child, and lady senior citizen. Oh, and a Chip Fiend...

Fish on the menu here is haddock, cod, skate and plaice. The plaice was priced on the menu from £3.80 but when a customer asked for a large one, the wet fish was held aloft by one of the staff to show a size priced at £4.60.

We asked for fish, chips and peas, open. The fish was freshly fried as the shop had only just opened. We were asked if we wanted to put salt and vinegar on the chips before the fish was served. A nice touch.

Then we were asked if we wanted mint on the peas. We said yes. The pot of peas was microwaved and bagged. The meal came to £6.10p.

The cod fillet was quite flat but surrounded in the most mouthwatering batter. Extremely light, crisp and delicate. Amongst the best batter we had ever tasted.

The chips were thin and crispy with no hint of grease. They had a proper homemade look about them. Some had come through the cutter still joined together.

The mushy peas were authentic. Clearly soaked and cooked on the premises. They had that slightly soapy taste that proper peas have. However, there didn't seem to be any mint in them upon inspection.

We couldn't find a bench in the vicinity so a visit to West's is probably best done with a car/van picnic in mind... unless you live round the corner.
