Sefton Fish Bar, Lichfield, Staffordshire

The Chip Fiends visited Lichfield again. (On a previous occasions we went to Queens Fish and Chips and Valley Fish Bar - the latter where there was a copy of Panikos Panayi's book Fish and Chips: a History on the counter!)

This chip shop was reliably situated near the town centre's railway station where we disembarked for lunch. Sefton Fish Bar is in a Georgian building with steep steps leading up to the front door. (There is level access from a car park at the rear). From the exterior it does not look much like a chip shop at all. More like a dolls' house, or a child's drawing of a symmetrical house with windows in each corner, a door in the middle, and chimneys at each side of its roof. On the inside it is more reassuringly a chippy. And the service is chipper...

We ordered fish, chips and mushy peas. There was only one big fish ready which was dished up for Fiend no.1. Fiend no.2 was given two minis instead. Fiend no.1 also treated themselves to a pickled onion.

We crossed the busy road to sit on a bench which faced the shop.

The cod was rather nice, but the batter was on the thick, spongy side - possibly from having stood in the warmer waiting for us.

The dainty chips were cut from new potatoes.

The best part of the meal was the pot of peas. These consisted of lovely soft pearls suspended in a good, reasonably-natural coloured sauce.

Most of the batter was rejected.
