Vegan Fish and Chips at Bobbo’s, Sileby

ha

We’ve seen quite a few chippies beginning to add battered halloumi or Tofush (tofu) and chips to their menus recently.

We decided to check out Bobbo’s, in the village of Sileby, who have quite an extensive list of vegan options.

We ate in as they have a few small tables lined up along the wall, so sat down and admired the “awesome” mural as we waited for our food to be cooked.

This Chip Fiend spotted two square-shaped items being brought from the fridge or freezer and dropped into the fryer. A fresh batch of chips was also tipped into the hot fat.

A few minutes later salt and vinegar was added by the friendly staff before the pretend fish and mushy peas were placed and dolloped on top.

“It doesn’t taste like fish” said one, whilst I pointed out that fried cod doesn’t taste fishy either. The batter on the vegan fish was a bit on the tough side so was difficult to cut with a plastic fork. Human digits soon pulled it apart. It was nice enough but a lighter batter would improve it no end.

The chips were super; very fresh, floury on the inside and some were cut very long.

The peas were very nice too. One of us decided to try a variety of Crucials sauces, commenting that the garlic mayo was really good.
