The Real Fish and Chip Co. Newark

The Real Fish and Chip Co. is a fish and chip restaurant on a main junction of the Newark's ring road, just a stone's throw from the town centre. This place has something of a multiple personality as it also calls itself the Real Burger Co. and had a banner advertising 'all you can eat breakfasts' on the day this Chip Fiend visited. It has a modern look of bare wooden floors and metal seats that are popular in hipster-style establishments. The sounds of Kenny Loggins' 'Footloose' and Paul Simon's 'Call Me Al' on the PA however, were undecidedly '80s.

Cod, haddock or plaice is available on the menu in mini, regular or large size. I plumped for a regular haddock with minty mushy peas and a pot of tea for one.

When the food arrived the waiter set the plate down clumsily, the fish skidded onto the table top, which the young man then hastily retrieved with his hand! Let's hope his mitt was spotlessly clean.

The chips had the appearance of bought-in ones and were going a bit dry. The (skin-on) haddock was nice enough, with a light, crisp batter. The mushies had just the right amount of mint added, which had been stirred in rather than dolloped on the top.
