The Chip Fiends were alerted to Hastings Original Lemon Ketchup a few years ago when it appeared as a feature on a TV food / cookery programme. We tried to obtain a bottle, but it was difficult due to the demand that the TV spot initiated. The ketchup had sold out.
Recently
we tried again and bought a bottle by mail order. Then we
went out and tested it...
Sitting on a bench in the shade of a tree we unscrewed
the bottle for the first time and poured it carefully over some chunky chips
and some delicious flakes of freshly fried haddock.
The
lemon ketchup is everything you expect it to be. Zesty, piquant and sharp. 34%
of its ingredients are composed of lemon zest and juice, whilst the rest is
malt vinegar, water, sugar, cornflour, root ginger, shallots, salt and spices.
You do not need to pour it lavishly over your chips. We would suggest a few
dollops to begin with, and then pour more as you become accustomed to the
taste.
It made
a very pleasant but unusual addition to our chippy tea on this occasion, but we
are not sure we would use it all the time. Salt and vinegar or curry sauce are
still our preferred condiments and sauces. Nevertheless it was delicious.
