Bond's Chip Shop, Aylsham, Norfolk

Granville Bond used to be a double fronted butchers / wet fish shop with chip shop next door and stood in this spot on Red Lion Street in Aylsham. The Chip Fiend's spotted it a few years ago and made a mental note to return. Whilst the present Bond's retains the fish and chip shop, the premises next door is now a charity shop.

On the day one of the Chip Fiends visited, the staff (wearing smart blue and white striped flat caps and aprons) were serving some workmen during the lunch trade.

All the fish is cooked to order. Bond's fry cod and haddock (in two sizes), plaice, skate and rock. There's also quite an extensive pizza menu, but that'll do for someone else.

I ordered large haddock, chips and mushy peas. The meal was served in a card box with the peas in a separate pot, a plastic fork, and paper napkin.

The courteous chap behind the counter asked if I needed two forks (for sharing). When I informed him the meal was my treat he said "you must be very hungry today!"

Bond's is a tiny space but the owners have managed to squeeze in two tables and four chairs, so you could eat inside if you wish. The interior is decorated with nautical touches such as pictures of beach huts.

As it was a sunny day, this Chip Fiend sat and ate al fresco in the market place.

The fish was perfect. A big, meaty piece of skin-on haddock in a very thin, crisp batter. The chips were medium cut and very good. The peas made a nice dip but had the look of those out of a tin. (Grainy-looking with no whole peas in the mush).

I ate slowly so as to not become full too quickly, and managed to polish off all the lip-smacking fish. Lovely.
