Alma Park Fish Bar, Grantham, Lincolnshire

The attention of the Chip Fiends to Alma Park Fish Bar was alerted by Instagram. This demonstrates that the social media app is a worthwhile addition to any chippy's marketing campaign (alongside other apps, A-boards in the street, and that good old faithful whiff of the frying range that draws punters in from the surrounding estates...)

As this Chip Fiend made their way towards the Alma Park area on the outskirts of Grantham the smell of fish and chips confirmed that we were almost upon our destination of desires.

And there it was. A smart and compact suburban chip shop with originally-styled fish-shaped planters fixed to the brick wall outside. The teeny flowers somewhat obscured by Moby Dick!...

Although small, this shop has some handy tables inside and out of the shop. The menu here is very good. Alma Park serve a lovely looking fish pie which we can't recall any other fish shop doing, apart from establishments with larger 'restaurant' spaces. This Fiend, however, opted for large haddock, chips and mushy peas (open) which was served in a cardboard, lidded tray. I had to ask for a fork, which seemed rather odd.

New potatoes were being fried on this day. These were possibly the best new potato chips I had eaten. Usually chips fried from new potatoes are thin, greasy, translucent and a bit insipid but these were quite robust and chunky.  They had that unmistakable new potato flavour that makes a nice change at this time in the spud season.

The peas had a lovely runny sauce that one could dip the chips into.

The fish was nice but had just started to go a tad dry and chewy having stood waiting for me in the cabinet. The batter was good. It was knobbly just as we like it. I bet it would have been great straight from the fryer.

Alma Park Fish Bar is a chip shop that leaves a positive lasting impression.
