James Street Old English Chippy, Kimberley, Nottinghamshire

The Chip Fiends have been intrigued by this chip shop for some time. The eye-catching mural that faces the main road through Kimberley encouraged us to make a mental note of  visiting. The day finally arrived.

We had heard that you have to let the fryers know you want fish as you enter. In our opinion this is the sign of a good chip shop.

As we waited for our large cod a few workers were coming in for their Friday lunchtime treats. Somebody took a big order out in a box including cobs (bread rolls) for chip butties. The potato fritters in the cabinet were mouthwatering.

Our meal was soon ready. Fish, chips and peas, open. No.1 Fish and Chips also serve mini fish and plaice.

The shop is small but there are two bar stools to the front left for indoor eating. There is also a street bench underneath the mural. We sat on the bench.

The chips were lovely. Chunky with firm, straight edges. They had a homemade feel about them because they were in irregular shapes and sizes - but most of them were very long!

The fish was perfect. Definitely one of the best we have had in a while. Fresh flakes of cod in a light, crisp batter. The mushy peas were marvellously soft and creamy too.

We were worried that we might not be able to eat everything - which would have been a waste. But the meal was so deliciously light that we managed the whole lot, apart from a few batter scraps.
