Silver Marlin Fish Bar, Nottingham

The thing that first brought this chip shop to our attention was the sign in the window that explained that the Silver Marlin opens on Fridays at tea time.

For those not in the know, some  of us refer to our evening meal as 'tea' and our lunchtime meal as 'dinner'. These are the clientele that Silver Marlin are reaching out for, and there were plenty of locals visiting for tea when this Chip Fiend visited one Friday at 5.30pm.

This is a family business, and there were three friendly staff working efficiently; battering, frying and serving food.

The fish is of excellent quality here because every piece is fried upon order. As each customer entered they were either asked if they wanted fish, or, because they were regular customers, they already knew to mention it as soon as they walked in.

The haddock (at £4) is quite big. Cod portions at £2.90 are a little smaller. The batter is perfect. Jagged and light in texture but dark in colour. The fish perfectly steamed inside.

The chips that I had were thinly cut, crisp and an orange golden colour. The mushy peas were a bit of a lurid colour but tasted good and had a nice, thick texture.

The shop is definitely more catered for locals to take their food home. There's not really anywhere to sit nearby for  an 'open' meal. There is a park nearby but as I visited the chippy in darkness the park was a no-go area.

The shop is plain and simple but the service is top notch.
