Major Fish Restaurant, Bilston

I fancied some battered chips again. This meant a return trip to the Black Country to enjoy this special delicacy. I decided to take a tram to Bilston to the famous Majors.

The chip shop declares itself “The Famous...” on the large signs above the windows and doors, and who is to dispute that? I joined the long queue to eat in. The queue for takeaway was equally long. There were many people sat outside on Church Street already enjoying their takeaway lunches.

Standing in the queue gave me a chance to clock the other customers’ nosh (as well as the plastic dinosaurs). Most were ordering the mini cod and chips, with mushy peas or curry sauce served in glass ramekins. The chips looked fantastic; with that unmistakeable bright orange glow that only a battered chip can have. It’s interesting to note that the batter on the fish wasn’t orange.

There are a lot of staff working here, so there was a continuous procession of raw chips being carried from the back room to the fryers.

The chips were delicious with a delicate crunch from the batter and fluffy on the inside. The cod was decent but the batter was a tad on the thick side for a portion this size. Perhaps I should have ordered a large cod instead. The curry sauce was very thick and tasty, similar to Chinese style curry sauce but with an added texture.
