Kelham Friary, Sheffield

The Kelham Friary is in a very useful spot for customers making their way between Sheffield city centre and Kelham Island. We can imagine it doing very well during mid evenings and night time. We visited shortly after opening time in a late afternoon / early evening.

An unused space to the left of the premises looks as though it could be turned into a cafe. It would be great if this is the owner's intention and if it takes off.

The strange thing about this new addition to Sheffield chip shops is that when the Chip Fiends visited there were no signs on the door about opening times. It meant three trips until we found it actually doing business! Hopefully the shop has rectified this oversight by now.

What we did find when we visited was that the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The interior of the shop was spotlessly clean and smart.

We waited for some fresh chips to be fried and went for small fish and a shared pot of curry to complete the meal.

There are no outdoor benches in the nearby vicinity which may be a problem for takeaway orders. The Fiends found a fence just down the road to lean on.

The chips were piping hot and delicious. The fish had a somewhat soft batter which we peeled away and discarded. It wasn't thick though, which suggests the fish would have been more satisfying straight out of the fryer. The curry sauce was average.

Lasting impressions: smart shop; friendly service; might struggle to compete with some other great Sheffield chip shops. A cafe would be an added bonus if the area calls for it.
