Mac's Plaice, Salthouse, Norfolk

The Chip Fiends have journeyed up and down the North Norfolk coastal road many times before, hunting down chip shops in towns such as Wells and Sheringham.

We had noticed a sign for fish and chips on numerous occasions in the desolate marshlands of Salthouse and wondered where the shop was.

On this visit the sign had opening hours listed: Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday between 4.30pm and 7pm (ish).  We decided to return at 4.30 to eat.

After a hunger-inducing walk through the marshes we arrived back at Mac's Plaice... and to our surprise the chippy was a trailer! Of course. Why hadn't we thought of that before?!

Mac's serve plaice, cod or haddock with chips for £7. If you don't fancy fish there are plenty of alternatives such as black pudding, white pudding, or even haggis from this Scottish-themed chip stall.

We ordered haddock, chips and a pickled onion. The fish was fried to order and didn't take long. Because the chippy is near to a bus stop there are benches nearby where you can sit and eat.

The chips had a uniform look about them - like frozen chips - but a piece of a spud eye on one of them seemed to suggest they were hand cut. They were very crisp and golden. The fish batter was light and pale in colour. The haddock (with skin on) was good. Unusually it had a slightly pinkish colour. The Chip Fiends have never seen a haddock like this before.

Maybe it had been cross bred with a salmon? The ginormous pickled onion was an unwieldy beast to handle and a 50p well spent.

There is quite a lot of sky to gaze at in Salthouse. We recommend you eat Mac's fish and chips while you wonder at the view.

  1. Well I hope your experience was better than ours last summer! It cost over £40 for our family & I've never been so disgusted in all my life I doubt it was even cod or haddock even the chips were hardly edible !! NEVER AGAIN don't waste your money !!!!

  2. I agree with the comment above; we bought fish and chips from here last summer too and they were expensive, undercooked and tasteless. We ended up putting them in the bin! Thought they would be good because on the coast, they were one of the worst fish and chip meals I have ever had.
