The Raven Fryer, Braunstone, Leicester

The illuminated Pukka Pies sign could be seen from the end of one of the darkest streets in Leicestershire. This is no country lane, its a residential area, with minimal lighting.

We walked into a brightly lit shop that was busy with customers. We soon realised that one of the customers didn't appear to be buying any food, he was just stood at the counter chatting with the staff, much like a person stood at a bar in a pub. This is a convivial chippy and we were also made to feel very welcome.

One of us ordered mini cod and chips and the other a large cod and chips. Mushy peas were shared. We spotted a humongous black pudding in the heated display and so did another customer who decided to add it to his order of a kebab.

The fish was cooked to order, the large one being whale sized. “Have you had our fish before?” said the woman serving, “You’ll be back, trust me!” The man stood at the counter looked at the battered cod and said “Best fish in Leicester”.

We had a car picnic, the piping hot food soon steamed up the windows.
The pale batter on the cod was thin and crispy and the fish itself was succulent and sweet. The chips were nice (medium thick), the one scoop portion was a sensible amount but this Chip Fiend still struggled to finish theirs after gobbling down the enormous fish.

The mushy peas were the type we enjoy; undyed and with some bite.
