21 Fish and Chips, Congleton

We've heard this was a fantastic chippy years ago, probably the best in Congleton, so we knew we had to go and see what it was like for ourselves.

It's not just a chippy, it's also a Chinese takeaway. On arrival, many bags of Chinese food were being collected by another customer. The smell of this food was mouth watering.

The prices here looked pretty good value to these eyes and cod and chips was ordered. The cod was £3.00 and the chips £1.30!

It's interesting how prices of fish suppers vary from town to town, North and South. A similar meal eaten a few days ago from another chip shop cost £6.50.

The food was served after the cod was cooked to order.

Then something happened that has never happened in a chip shop before. There were no wooden or plastic forks on display. The woman serving apologetically said "Five pence for the fork." We had seen a sign "Spoon Forks 5p" but thought this was for some fancy gizmo if a wooden fork wasn't adequate.

The food didn't look particularly remarkable but upon eating we discovered how delicious it was. The batter was extremely light and crisp. The cod very fresh and succulent.

The chips weren't so much fluffy on the inside as creamy. They were cut medium thick. We ate the lot and kept the valuable fork.
