Hillsborough Fish Bar, Sheffield

It was so laid back here. One man working and cooking small batches so everything was fresh. He said he'd been busy since 11:30 the Saturday morning we visited. He liked working on his own at weekends, from what he was saying.

It was quite busy on this visit. There were some great combinations of food being ordered. One we spotted was a Yorkshire Fish Cake in a bread roll with a sprinkling of chips on top, almost as decoration. Utterly superb.

Another had battered sausage on mushy peas and chips. The mushy peas looked good. We just went for cod and chips.

The fish was cooked to order as it had been for another customer. The chips were also being fried in small batches too.

When the food was served it was piping hot. "Enjoy it!" said the man. We sat at a table inside the shop.

The chips were cut quite flat. They were golden yellow and utterly delicious. The cod was portioned thick and coated in a light and crunchy batter. The succulent white flakes of cod were very satisfying. The owner asked if everything was alright and agreed it was a good piece of fish.
