Jackson's Chippie, Ilkeston, Derbyshire

Jackson's is an unusual-looking chip shop. Housed inside the ground floor of a bay-fronted Victorian building, it looks elegant and quirky.

Once you step inside it looks like a regular fish and chip shop. Small, and brightly lit.

Rather than make an order for cod, haddock, or plaice, this Chip Fiend simply asked for 'fish and chips open' to see what was dished up.

There were two fish portions in the cabinet and one of these was placed onto a scoop of chips on an open polystyrene tray. This was what I refer to as a 'sensible' sized portion for lunch. Small but satisfying and with no chance of waste.

The chips were lovely. The type that you can imagine what they will taste like before you bite into them. Piping hot, pale golden and fresh.

The fish held much promise. I could tell it hadn't been in the cabinet long because it too was piping hot and fresh. The batter on top was thin and crispy. It was a pity that some of its soggy bottom had coated the chips underneath. Other than this, it was a tasty lunch.
