Calais Fish Bar, Burton upon Trent

"Is that enough chips for yer mate?" said the young man behind the counter, after pouring a large scoop of them into a polystyrene tray. It was more than enough.

This Chip Fiend had ordered medium fish, assuming that the fish in the display were that size. "These are the small ones" I was told. It would appear they serve fish in four sizes here, then; mini, small, medium and large.

There was a mini all day special with peas and the like for £3.20, but on this occasion I decided to go bigger.

The chips were medium thick and long. They'd been cut from some humongous potatoes. They had started to become a little chewy, so one wonders what time they were cooked. It was only twelve minutes past noon.

The fish was very good. A thick, skinless portion of cod with large flakes. The batter was nice and crisp too, with a good flavour.

It was more than enough chips. I couldn't finish them all.
