Hector's have been running their fish
and chip shop in St Helier since 1928. There is a restaurant and takeaway
counter here. The staff here wear black t-shirts with the Hector's logo on it
and the ambience is one of an unpretentious local chippy.
The Chip Fiends had a takeaway.
Haddock, chips and mushy peas open. The haddock was fried to order so while we
waited for it to be cooked we read the information board in the shop. The fish
is sourced from sustainable stocks in Scandinavia; the Maris Piper potatoes are
imported from Scotland and then hand cut on the premises.
When the food was ready it was
put into a polystyrene lidded tray. Salt and vinegar splashed on by the staff.
The lid was secured by an elastic band and everything was placed into a branded
Hector's plastic bag.
The chips were a dark golden colour
and nicely crisp on the outside. The haddock was a chunky rectangular portion,
rather than a fillet. The batter thin and crispy. The mushy peas tasted nice
and starchy and had a paste-like texture. A bit more salt and vinegar would've
been good.
The meal was eaten on a bench
overlooked by the sculpture of a crapaud - a common toad, or the name given to
Jerseymen.
