Chips in the Pub

Micropubs seem to be cropping up all over the place; little pubs in converted shops that sell cask ale, wine and spirits but tend to shun fizzy beer.

They seem to be run by inventive types that like to keep their customers happy. We'd heard of a couple of these small boozers, that are situated close to chip shops, serving up free chips to customers in the evening.

One pub is the Tap and Barrel in Wigston, Leicestershire. This happens to be right next door to a chippy. It seems when the chip shop was closing one evening they brought in what one imbiber described as "the overflow" but possibly meant leftovers. What a super idea, rather than let good food go to waste. The chips were offered to hungry beer swillers free of charge.

Another little watering hole is the Draycott Tap House, Derbyshire. The staff here cross the road to the Cantonese takeaway, buy chips then plate them up to pass around the tables.
A very popular Friday night ritual.
