Neptune's Fish and Chips, Sheffield

Catch a bus out of Sheffield city centre up the Ecclesall Road and in just over ten minutes you will reach the brow of a hill where a cluster of small independent shops sit.

On the way you will pass one of those hideous chain restaurants, the name beginning with 'H' and ending in 'den's' that purports to be a chippy. Do not stop. Pass Go! Pick up £2.50 ... because that is all you will need to buy a delicious mini fish and chip special with sauce of choice.

This is exactly what one of the Chip Fiends did one sunny lunchtime in Steel City.

The mini fish was every bit as succulent as the person behind the counter said it would be. The batter as light as air. The chips were quite daintily cut (as they often are in Sheffield). The mushy peas had a satisfyingly creamy taste that matched their texture.

This is Neptune's budget meal and very good value for money. The variety of choice on the rest of the menu is very impressive - including calamari, deep fried halloumi and crab claws. There's a strong emphasis on gluten-free too.

This chip shop is smart and compact. It's a pity it is not a little bigger. Then it could accommodate a few tables so that it's ambitious menu can be fully appreciated by eating under cover in the shop itself.
