Epton's, Skegness

You'll find Epton's in the main pedestrian thoroughfare in Skegness that takes visitors from the train station or coach park straight down to the beach.

Skeggy is a seaside resort abundant with fish and chip shops. (The fishing port of Grimsby is a short way up the coast). Chippies are almost everywhere you turn. Several of them have signs proclaiming their 'award winning' status.

Be cautious, however, the Chip Fiends once had to tip some 'award winning' chips and a seemingly fossilised fish into a litter bin in this seaside town. Word-of-mouth or a quick glance at another customer's food will give you a clue where the best chippies are here.

Epton's is very good. It's smart open-fronted shop invites you in. This is Skegness's oldest chip shop, established in 1929. There's a cafe to the left and an 'out sales' to the right.

We got a takeaway of fish and chips for £5.75. A sign stated that there was an offer of free peas with any fish bought.

The chips were lovely. Nice and fluffy, with a crisp coating. The fish turned out to be haddock (skin on) and was also very good. The mushy peas were a delicious bonus.

Almost everything was eaten apart from the thicker parts of the batter. We had to leave room for one of the local cake shops or ice cream stalls that Skegness has to offer too.
