Bene's, Edinburgh

The ferocious bubbling of fat. That's the sound we noticed as we stood in the queue with our mouths watering.
We knew our food would be cooked to perfection in fat this hot.

Bene's is easy to find, between the bustle of the Royal Mile and the Scottish Parliament. The illuminated neon sign 'Battered Mars Bars' is difficult to miss.

We stepped inside to a small space where we were almost queuing outside the door. The menu here is extensive; white pudding, haggis and pakoras as well as your usual chippy fayre. The Chip Fiends ordered haddock fish suppers. As the food was cooked to order another customer arrived and had a (humongous) white pudding and chips, liberally doused in sauce.

Yep, sauce, that's one of the reasons we were here; to enjoy the Scottish condiment of brown sauce combined with vinegar.

The chips were crispy and delicious. Sure, we prefer them a bit thicker but these were very good.

The haddock (skinless) was portioned wide; it reminded us of battered fish in a comic strip cartoon. The batter was light and crisp, and the fish was white, sweet, succulent and perfectly steamed inside.

The sauce was very good, it complimented the chips exceptionally.
