Naked Fish, Bridlington

"At Naked Fish we always strive to use locally sourced sustainable fresh fish. Over 70% of the fish we serve is caught within 10 miles of the restaurant. We believe fresh is best!" - so states the legend on a blackboard inside this Bridlington eatery.

Although Naked Fish also has a takeaway counter, we recommend you eat in so that you can take your time to read the eye-popping menu and sneak a look at what other people are ordering on adjacent tables.

This fish and chip restaurant is smart without being pretentious and has a mixed clientele including young families and those in retirement.

Just a selection of the fish on offer includes cod, haddock, brill, smoked haddock, sole, halibut, trout, monkfish, scampi, and scallops. Crab or lobster salad is also available, with a tank of fresh lobsters swimming between the restaurant and takeaway areas.

The smoked haddock in batter sounded rare and tempting but was unavailable on this day.

Instead, this Chip Fiend opted to plump for something really local, so ordered a Scarborough Woof (cat fish). Whatever fish you have here can be fried either in a light batter, well done, or 'just as it comes'. (Some of the more delicate fish are pan fried).

As I waited for my supper I clocked two elaborate-looking lobster salads on the next table accompanied by huge hunks of bread and butter and a finger bowl with wedge of lemon for the diners to wash their fingers.

My meal soon arrived looking as pretty as a picture. It was served with 'proper chips', mushy peas and a generous helping of homemade tartar sauce.

I'd never tried 'woof' or cat fish before, but found this to be one of the loveliest fish I had ever eaten. A clean, white flesh with no hint of the fishy flavour I had expected. (I thought it would taste like rock salmon). The woof had a close texture like a giant whole tail scampi. There were two long pieces on the plate. A very generous serving. The light batter was like a tempura which worked really well with this type of fish.

The 'proper chips' we're very nice. Irregular shapes, and on the chunky side, some with hints of skin on. The tartar sauce was so sharp it made my eyes hurt!

The mushy peas were lovely and it was good to see they were undyed. However the ramekin that they were served in was chipped. If the crockery gets chipped - throw it out!

The staff are young and friendly, and the chef came out of the kitchen to present one of the regulars with his meal. This customer said he visits twice every week to try all the different fresh fish that are on offer. He also bought some to take home for his dog. I hope he ordered the woof ...

My meal (with bottle of beer) came to £15.45.
