Werringtons Fish and Chips, Kettering

Werringtons is just out of the town centre, along Stamford Road. The Chip Fiends had heard good things about this chippy, so decided to head there one Saturday lunchtime.

The shop looks good. Nice bold signage and a large notice in the window states that the shop is award winning.

We stepped in to see that the fish here was already cooked and on display. Everyone knows that fish is best cooked to order. In fact, the heated display already had a lot of sausages, potato fritters, pineapple rings and spring rolls awaiting mouths to be filled.

Already feeling somewhat disappointed we ordered the bargain priced cod and chips at £4.95 and found a spot to munch.

The chips were cut nice and chunky. They were beginning to look a little wizened; a sign that these also had been cooked some time ago. They were lukewarm. When we put the salt and vinegar on our chips we want the aroma to hit us as the chips are steaming hot. No such luck today.

The batter was incredibly tough. It resembled a thick brandy snap.
This was chiseled off with a wooden chip fork to reveal a decent, thick portion of cod.

One can imagine this food is great when it's fresh out of the fryer rather than stood in the display, as it was on this visit.

On the way back into town we found a pub where one of the customers was discussing chip shops in Kettering. We shall continue this story on our next visit here.
