Plumtree Fish Restaurant, Keyworth, Notts

This delightfully homely/quirky restaurant is next door to the owner's take away fish and chip shop.

When the Chip Fiends visited, it really felt like walking into someone's home. We entered into the hallway where we were greeted by a lovely lady and shown to our table, in what was, we assume, originally the sitting/dining room of the house.

Everywhere was sparkling clean and quite minimalistic but tastefully feminine. After being given the menu we had plenty of time to make our choice, over a glass of wine of course! (A very small but good selection and reasonably priced.)

Just before we remark on the food, it is worth mentioning the beautiful 'Dallas'-style bathroom (complete with bath) where customers can ‘spend a penny'. This was another indication of a home being converted into a restaurant, which really adds to the character and experience of Plumtree.

Onto the food: One of the Fiends ordered salmon with a Cajun twist, chips and mushy peas. The salmon was very well cooked. Moist, but maybe a bit too oily with the Cajun dressing, as it is an oily fish anyway. However, the Salmon Fiend still enjoyed it.

The other Fiends went for haddock, cod and a vegetarian option of a cheese fry-it and salad with chips.

The cheese fry it wasn't on the restaurant menu but quickly added by the friendly waitress as a veggie alternative when taking our order. The cheesy fried goodness was a heavenly delight with the lovely chips.

The haddock was delicious – pure white and fresh. Perfectly cooked with a light, crispy batter. The cod was similarly excellent.

The presentation was beautiful and the peas came in a separate pot. It was quite a big portion. How often to you get to eat the whole portion of chips before running out of mushy peas? And the peas tasted proper 'home made'! (Just like the kind of dried peas that come with a white disc of bicarbonate of soda, and are soaked overnight in water, before cooking for ages on the hob).

The chips were not exactly thick cut (but they weren't skinny). They were cooked to perfection. Firm and golden in colour, and creamy and fluffy on the inside. The portion was just right.

The bill came with some white chocolate fish and chips – a nice touch.

Overall it was a lovely experience, in a peaceful ambience with very attentive staff. It was a quaint and homely way of enjoying fish and chips in a restaurant.
