Golden Union, Soho

A midweek visit to London and lunch required a short stroll from busy Oxford Street.
Golden Union, on Poland Street has been open around eight years, and has a great reputation for excellent fish and chips.

It's smart, with white tiled walls and black tiles spelling out the word FISH in large letters. They're proud of what they do here; their website states the cod and haddock are caught in Peterhead and delivered daily.

There was a small queue for tables but we were seated and our order of cod and chips taken in around five minutes.

To drink we stuck with London tap water but there are wines and beers you can order.

The chunky cod certainly tasted very fresh, falling apart in flakes. The chips were cut medium thick and very crisp outside, fluffy inside. Certainly too good to put tomato ketchup on.
The batter was light in colour, thin and crispy.
The homemade tartare sauce was delicious and piquant.

We ate to the sound of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young piped quietly over the diners. Perfect.
