Gerard Street Fish Bar, Derby

Sometimes it's knowing when to stop eating that counts most. A perfectly cooked meal of fish and chips shouldn't sit heavily on the stomach and leave you feeling stuffed. Similarly, if your chip portion seems over generous, it is a good idea to halt before your stomach starts to stretch, and freeze the leftovers to use for oven chips.

The Chip Fiends took heed of this when they visited the Gerard Street Fish Bar. Take a look at the following photographs. These demonstrate the point at which we stopped eating.

The portion of chunky chips was generous, but it was the heaviness of the batter that really stopped us in our tracks.

When fried fish was first invented, the batter wasn't eaten. Consumers peeled it away to eat the fish within. The batter was discarded. The Chip Fiends did the very same on this occasion.

We ordered the Mini Fish Special (a bargain at £4.10), one with mushy peas, the other with curry sauce.

The food was packed into boxes and bagged. We were asked if we wanted sauce on the meal or separate in a pot - a nice touch. The shop premises are clean and show signs of recent refurbishment. Staff uniforms and notices on the wall say that the shop has won awards in 2007 and 2015.

We were puzzled by the large amount of food already waiting in the hot cabinet. This included a mountain of sausages! Perhaps the shop was waiting for an onslaught of customers any minute, but it was reasonably quiet when we visited.

Shop / service: 3
Over all: 2
