Wackers is a successful family run fish and chip restaurant with branches in York and Scarborough. The York chippy on Gillygate is quite close to the tourist spots, but just beyond the quaint part of the city.
The system works like this: Find a table then go to the counter and place your order. The food will soon be brought to you.
This Chip Fiend plumped for a small haddock special: fish, chips, mushy peas, bread and butter and a pot of tea - all for £8.25.
It was an early lunch time and customers were arriving. I didn't have to wait long to be served. There's no piped music. A low hum of conversation softly filled the room.
The food was fine. The light batter on the fish was good and the mushy peas were lovely.

I'd recommend Drake's Fisheries in York next time you're up that way.
