The Admiral, Overseal

We came across the Admiral quite by chance. Driving one day in the Leicestershire / Derbyshire border we turned a corner and there it was. A sign depicting Nelson, looking through his telescope for some delicious cod and haddock with which to accompany his chips.

The Admiral chippy in Overseal could not be further from the sea, but the fish that is served here tastes as if it has just been caught.

The Fiends had a combination of haddock, cod, chips, mushy peas and curry sauce on our visit.

Both types of fish came in large portions (for £4.50) and fell apart in big, moist flakes. The cod was skinless, the haddock was skin on. Some of us ate the batter, whilst others of us peeled it away.

The golden chips were excellent. Long, medium thick, and slightly crispy on the outside.

The peas were an off-putting lurid green, but the curry sauce was pleasantly unctuous and tasty.

Service is swift in this busy shop, and staff have a chat with all the locals as they place their orders. A land locked picnic to remember.
