Minted Mushy Peas

This delicacy is synonymous with the East Midlands. One of the great traditions of a visit to Nottingham Goose Fair for many people is a pot of warming mushy peas with a generous ladle of vinegary mint sauce.

Several years ago there was a large stall in the Nottingham indoor market named 'The Hot Pea Man'. Business always seemed to be good, and it was an ideal place to grab a quick, cheap lunch. Unfortunately it closed, but was replaced a couple of years later by a 'Robin Hood' pea stall. Sadly this lasted little over a year.

The annual real real ale festival at Nottingham Castle (which is also named after Robin Hood) is yet another event that has a hot pea stall.

Apart from the intermittent fairs and beer festival, the only remaining permanent establishment that we know of in Nottingham for customers to try the mushy pea / mint sauce combo is the stall 'Dinner Jackets'. This stands in the busy shopping area of Listergate. As well as serving jacket potatoes, these sell a generous portion of piping hot peas for a bargain £1.

Chip Diaries readers will have noticed that there is another city where the Fiends have tried minted mushy peas before, and that was in Norwich. The pea stall in Norwich market is always busy with lunchtime customers, and we loved it.

You may ask yourself, is this an East Midlands or East Anglian delicacy?
